Academic Initiatives for Mentoring Student University Transition Opportunities Program - Learning Community
UTOP-LC

What is UTOP-LC?
Upon the completion of UTOP, selected students reside on campus, take 3 classes together and participate in various cultural activities.  Students in the Learning Community reside in one of the newer and most innovative residence hall on campus, Cypress Hall.  To learn more about Cypress Hall, please visit the UNC Charlotte Housing website.

Who can participate in the program?
Anyone who participated in UTOP.

What types of courses and activities are available for UTOP-LC students?
The program is designed to have students engaged in coursework and activities that emphasize liberal arts education,  diversity, campus connections, and growth and development. The students in the program take classes to fulfill the General Education Goals.

What are the benefits of UTOP-LC?
Participants continue to enroll in classes together and share the same living/learning environments during the fall and spring semesters as they did during the UTOP summer experience. This allows the participants to study together and offer support to one another in all aspects of college life.  Academic support services and co-curricular activities are also provided throughout the one-year period.

Although students are no longer in the community after completion of the freshmen year, our office continues to advise students.

UTOP-LC Information:
The UTOP Learning Community presents its students with academic challenges, introduction to culture and diversity (as defined by Pop Culture through Sociology), volunteer-ism and social outlets.

Students have a host of programs to attend that facilitate holistic learning.  Due to hectic schedules, students may not be able to attend all events, however, students are encouraged attend as many as possible.  The student who attends the most events during the Semester receives a $300.00  scholarship.  Attendance is monitored through a point system.  Additional information is available in the AIMS Office.

Socials:

There are at least four socials during the academic year.  Socials have food, games and prizes.  This is an opportunity for students to take a break from studying and other extracurricular activities and simply have fun with their fellow Learning Community participants.

Culture and Diversity:

Throughout the semester, there are various events on campus that students are encouraged to attend.  These activities are geared specifically to create awareness and equip program participants with the tools to understand and be comfortable with the myriad of differences that exist in our world.  Additionally, some off-campus events will be planned specifically for students in the Learning Community.  This “Connection Charlotte” program introduces students to the Charlotte community and its many offerings.
